Project: Optimising Traffic Flow at Wembley Stadium

Innovation:
This project showcased our innovative approach to transport planning. We developed new concepts in car park modelling, with entry/exit ramps, detailed internal layout, vehicle interaction, and contraflow lanes. We also innovated in pedestrian modelling, with ‘crowd’ behaviour and interactions with general traffic.

This case study exemplifies our approach at Modelling Group: combining our technical expertise with innovative solutions to tackle complex challenges in transport planning. It highlights our ability to create models that accurately represent real-world operations and contribute to effective decision-making in urban planning.

The Challenge:
Wembley Stadium, a landmark venue in London, experiences significant traffic on match days. The challenge was to assess the existing impact on the network surrounding the stadium, including temporary diversion measures, and to test various proposed layouts for a new multi-storey car park and various coach parking arrangements.

Our Approach:
At Modelling Group, we developed a microsimulation model to meet this challenge. The model served as a platform to assess vehicle interaction and clearance times in the internal layout of the coach parks. We also replicated the control of traffic exiting these coach parks, as guided by marshals on site.

As part of the same project, we simulated the departure of spectators after a sporting event. Our aim was to understand the impact on general traffic and coaches in the surrounding area of thousands of people leaving and to establish the time taken for all spectators to exit the stadium. We used the pedestrian module, PTV VisWALK, to model the spectators leaving the stadium, setting up pedestrian areas, inputs, and routes to simulate pedestrians using the walkways and footways outside the stadium.

The Outcome:
Our close collaboration with PTV ensured the walking behaviour utilised was suitable for ‘crowd-like’ behaviour. The project successfully provided insights into the impact of various layouts on network clearance times and contributed to the efficient management of traffic flow during events at the stadium.
