Innovation:
This project showcased our innovative approach to transport planning. We developed a detailed link/connector structure for warehouse levels & HGV swept paths and adapted the BIM import for VISSIM modelling.

This case study exemplifies our approach at Modelling Group: combining our technical expertise with innovative solutions to tackle complex challenges in transport planning. It highlights our ability to create models that accurately represent real-world operations and contribute to effective decision-making in urban planning.

The Challenge:
The proposed warehouse in Dagenham, London, required a detailed microsimulation model to be used as the basis for a promotional video for prospective occupiers. The challenge was to accurately represent the complex interactions of vehicles within the warehouse and to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed layout.

Our Approach:
At Modelling Group, we developed a microsimulation model using PTV VISSIM, which incorporated a Building Information Modeling (BIM) import of the proposed warehouse with the network structure overlaid on top. We developed the link/connector structure in great detail, configuring levels and z-offset values to ensure the vehicles manoeuvred as per the BIM import.

The swept paths of the Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) were a key component of the modelling. We imported the AutoTRACK paths and amended the link/connector structure to ensure the vehicles followed the same trajectories. This was critical for the corner where two HGVs could meet side-by-side, demonstrating to prospective owners that this wouldn’t be an issue. We also modelled the movements into the loading bays on the top floor in detail, to highlight the likely paths and any interactions with other vehicles.

The Outcome:
Our model was used for presentation purposes, with a focus on adding all necessary lane markings, appropriate barrier control, and a suitable set of camera positions & storyboards to inform the final video. The project successfully demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed warehouse layout to prospective occupiers.
