Project: Optimising Mobility at Mykonos Holiday Complex

Location: Mykonos Holiday Complex, Cyclades Island Group, Greece

Client: Motion Consultants

Key Outputs:

  • Assessment of fleet size

  • Range of scenarios and demand requirements assessed

Innovation:
This project showcased our innovative approach to transport planning. We developed a MaaS Ride Hail algorithm and implemented on-the-fly route determination to optimise the mobility within the complex.

This case study exemplifies our approach at Modelling Group: combining our technical expertise with innovative solutions to tackle complex challenges in transport planning. It highlights our ability to adapt our modelling techniques to unique scenarios, ensuring accurate representation of operations and contributing to efficient planning and decision-making in urban planning.

The Challenge:
The high-end holiday complex in Mykonos, Greece, presented a unique challenge due to its natural geography. The complex, located on a cliffside with stunning views, had many gradients and winding access routes. The challenge was to determine how residents travelled within the site and to assess the impacts of various scenarios on the movement around the site.

Our Approach:
At Modelling Group, we developed a VISSIM model to meet this challenge. The model was used to assess the movement around the site by residents using on-demand Golf Buggies. A resident could use a ‘call’ button in their villa to request a trip, which would assign the closest golf buggy to that trip and take the resident to their destination. We assessed a number of fleet sizes, calculated the trip length and trip delay, and analysed all scenarios and trips to inform a suitable fleet size.

To deliver the Mobility as a Service (MaaS) functionality, we developed a ride-hailing algorithm that linked directly to each vehicle and delivered the required demand. This innovative solution was not readily available with VISSIM and showcased our ability to adapt to unique challenges.

The Outcome:
Our innovative approach resulted in an optimised mobility solution for the holiday complex. The assessment of fleet size and the range of scenarios and demand requirements assessed provided valuable insights into the operation of the site.
